Which Perfume Should You Get Your Mom for Mother’s Day?

Getting a gift for your mother on Mother’s Day can be tough, especially if you’re not sure what your mom may like. Perfume is a classic and thoughtful gift that any mother is sure to love. Your mom may not want to splurge on a new perfume for herself, but would be thrilled if someone got it as a gift for her. But with so many types of perfume, how do you know which one to get? With just a little guidance, you can get your mother a fragrance that she is sure to adore.

The first thing you want to do before going shopping for your Mother’s Day gift is to get an idea of what kind of perfume you want to get before going to the store. Department stores can be overwhelming, and the perfume section can leave you especially anxious if you don’t know what you’re doing.

Perfumes in the Citrus or Fruity categories are best left as a gift for someone else, but not for Mom. Unless you know that she really favors these particular scents, you don’t want to go on a whim and get these. Fragrances in these categories are really aimed at very young people and your mother may not want to walk around smelling like a grapefruit; you want something a bit more sophisticated for Mom. Skip over all those fragrances that smell like lemon and orange and save them for your little sister.

Perfumes in the Floral or Oriental families would make better gifts for Mom. You can also get a body lotion of shower gel to match the perfume and make it a perfect gift. If your mom is more on the conservative and natural side, then a Floral fragrance would be better for her over an Oriental one. Floral perfumes are gentle and not too overpowering, and are often comprised of a single fragrance – not many scents all in one. Euphoria by Calvin Klein and Chanel No. 5 are very popular Floral perfumes, and will definitely not disappoint.

Oriental perfumes are a bit more exotic and sensual. If your mother is more on the flashy and bold side, then she may prefer this type of perfume. This is not the type of perfume she would wear every day, but if your mom likes to dress up and go out often, then an Oriental fragrance will be a big hit with her. Some examples of popular Oriental perfumes are Black Pearls by Elizabeth Taylor and Organza by Givenchy.

Before you buy any perfume, make sure to test out the scent. The counters are always full of small paper you can spray perfume on. Don’t spray the perfume on yourself, as it will smell different on you than it will on your mom. Also, if you want to test a second fragrance, the different fragrances will mix. Make sure to take a whiff of coffee or something strong in between fragrances in order to cleanse the palate. They usually have jars of coffee at the counters.

A beautiful perfume bottle is not more important than the perfume itself, but if you can find a good smelling perfume in a beautiful bottle, then get that. Mom will love looking at her exquisite bottle of perfume and showing it off to her friends. Make sure to wrap the gift beautifully. They can do this for you at the check out counter.

Remember, your mother is an individual, so when shopping for her, think of what she would like, not what you would like.
